What is the "Brevet des Collèges?"
Awarded by a jury, the Brevet is a diploma which certifies the knowledge and skills acquired at the end of Middle School.
The diploma is obtained with an overall result of at least 200 points out of 400, i.e. 10/20.
All the examinations are written. There is no oral examination.

Five written tests for individual candidates
The written tests relate to:

French - 100 points - (3 hrs)
mathematics - 100 points (2 hrs)
history and geography - 50 points (2 hrs)
sciences - 50 points - (1 hr) - (2 disciplines out of the following 3: physics-chemistry, life and earth sciences, technology
English - 100 points (1.5 hrs)

How do candidates register?
Registrations must be completed in November on the Cyclades platform. The information is sent directly to the families from the examination center, which is located at the French Embassy in Washington DC.

When and where do the Brevet examinations take place?
The tests take place over 2 days at the end of May / beginning of June.
When registering for the Brevet, families can choose from 9 possible examination centers located in the following French high schools: Boston, New York, Washington DC, Miami, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas.

12th Grade cycle = the last 2 years of high school.

An "individual candidate" is a student wishing to take the Baccalaureate, but is not enrolled in either a public or private school accredited by the French Ministry of Education, nor with the CNED. We often refer to individual candidates as "independent candidates."
From the start of the 2021 school year, independent students have two options to sit the Baccalaureate exam:

Option 1: students take the French literature (written & oral exam) at the end of 11th Grade and then take all other Baccalaureate subject exams at the end of 12th Grade.
Option 2: the final exams are split between the end of 11th Grade and the end of 12th grade, allowing them to be assessed successively at the end of each grade on the program studied during that year. With this option common core courses are assessed in both 11th and 12th Grade. Specific subjects (French literature, philosophy, two specializations, the grand oral and PE) are assessed either in 11th or 12th Grade.

The individual candidate makes his/her choice between these two options when registering for the Baccalaureate examinations in 11th Grade. This choice is final once registration for the exam is closed, except in exceptional circumstances, and subject to the authorization of the rector of the academy.

When and where do the Baccalaureate examinations take place?
The examinations take place at the end of 11th and 12th Grade. The number of examinations varies depending on the choices made at registration.
At the time of registration, families choose one of 9 possible examination centers, which are located at the following French High Schools: Boston, New York, Washington, Miami, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas.
